Paw-Paw July 6, 1918 to May 23, 2012

My Grandfather, Paw-Paw,  passed away on Wednesday.  He has been living in assisted living for a year or so in Houston, Texas. His health has taken a toll on him this last year. My Mom has flown and driven to Houston a couple of times throughout the year to say "Goodbye" to her Daddy. But, it just wasn't his time to go. This past week, Paw-Paw was having trouble breathing and had not responded to anyone for several days. The only thing he did respond to was when the nurses were giving him a bath. He cried out in pain. He had acquired bedsores in the hospital. Then, one morning two days before he passed, Granny Grace arrived in the morning to visit (as she did everyday) and Paw-Paw somewhat opened his eyes. He looked at her and said, "Hello, Sugar. I love you". And that was it. The last thing he said to anyone. Hospice was called in and he entered God's pearly gates the next morning. I am going to miss him so much! The evening before he passed, the kids and I were saying our prayers and I asked them to say a prayer for Paw-Paw. I had already discussed with them that Paw-Paw had lived a long life and now it was his time to go to Heaven and see his little girl, his brother and sisters and Mom and Dad. Cooper said that he wanted Paw Paw to know how much he loved him and that when he went to heaven he was going to love him so much even then. I asked Tristan if she had something she wanted to say? She said, "UM....UM....UM.....God our father, God our father, we thank you, we thank you. For our many blessings for our many blessings. Ahhahhmen, ahhhahhmen". I'm sure Paw Paw is smiling a her right now:)

Picture Above: This is a picture from his "younger days". I have this sitting on a table in my bedroom next to a picture of my Grandmother.

Picture Above: This is something Paw Paw gave to Me and Dena. His two grand-daughters.   A picture of him with adjoining a picture of me.

Picture Above: This picture is one of my favorites of Paw-Paw and I. A little history behind this picture...He only had two grand-daughters. Me and Dena. Dena is older. Paw-Paw promised Dena that he would come to Alabama and she better save a dance for him at her Senior Prom. Well, he lived up to his word. He made it to her Prom and got that dance. So, sweet, brings tears to my eyes. I was only 9 or 10 at the time. He told me, "Now I've made it to one of my grand-daughters prom, by God, I'm gonna come to yours and have a dance". He didn't make it to my senior prom.  But, he did make it to my High School Graduation. He hadn't forgotten after all those years. He wanted that dance with his grand-daughter. This is a precious moment that was caught on camera. One I will always cherish.

Love you dearly Paw Paw.  I will always remember helping with your "eye drops". I'm so glad Cooper was able to make great memories with you as well.   We love you!
